“Application”

This one-sheet summarizes key requirements that apply to stairs, ladders, mobile ladder stands/platforms, fall protection systems, and related walking-working surfaces. Always verify against the current eCFR text.

1910.23(b)
“Ladders”

Ladders must be used and maintained per manufacturer instructions and OSHA requirements; damaged ladders must be removed from service until repaired or replaced.

“Stairways”

Stairways must be installed and maintained to provide safe access/egress, including appropriate handrails/guardrails where required.

1910.29(b)
“Guardrail systems criteria”

Guardrails must meet strength, height, and configuration requirements, including top rails and midrails (or equivalent).

1910.29(f)
“Toe board (toeboard) criteria”

Where required, toeboards must prevent objects from falling to lower levels. Additional protections may be required depending on exposure.

“Personal fall protection systems”

PFAS components (anchorages, connectors, harnesses, lanyards) must be used as part of a complete system meeting performance requirements.

“Duty to have fall protection”

Fall protection is required at specified heights/exposures. The type of system depends on surface and work activity.

“Mobile ladder stands & platforms”

Mobile ladder stands and platforms must be designed/used to prevent tipping and provide safe climbing/working surfaces. Casters/wheels must be properly designed and secured as required.

“Walking-working surfaces”

Surfaces must be maintained in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition. Hazards such as holes and slippery surfaces must be addressed promptly.
