Tread Types
What is the Rule of Thumb when Choosing a Tread Type?
P Tread has holes in the metal and offer a non-aggressive, non-slip option to be used inside in a dry, non-dusty environment. This would be a good fit for warehouse, office, storefront and anywhere tennis shoes or street shoes are the norm.
G Tread is the most aggressive tread and will not allow slipping of any kind. Best used inside or outside in wet, oily or very dusty situations. This tread has a lot of grip and will allow snow and rain to fall thru the tread. You will want this type of tread in a work boot type environment.
X Tread is a great alternative tread to perforated. This is a tread that can be used in most any situation. This tread does not provide the grip of the serrated tread, but will allow dirt and water to fall thru the tread easily. Nothing will settle on the stairs. This tread is best suited for all shoe types with the exception high heels. The heels would catch in the tread and cause tripping.
R Tread would be the tread of choice in office or clean retail environments where wearing heels and street shoes are the norm. There is maintenance on this tread because of the wear and tear which will require you to replace the grip tape [which can be easily acquired at most hardware stores]. Depending on usage, it could be years in between replacement of the tape.

UPDATE TO OSHA REGULATIONS
Effective January 17, 2017, OSHA 1910 Subpart D (§1910.23 (e) (2) (i)) allows rolling ladders, also known as mobile ladder stands, with a 60 degree or less climb angle to be used by employers, with no minimum climb angle. This change parallels the regulations of the consensus standard for rolling ladders, ANSI ASC A14.7-2011, Safety Requirements for Mobile Ladder Stands and Mobile Ladder Stand Platforms (“ANSI A14.7”), paragraph 4.3.3
Due to updated OSHA requirements (§1910.23 (b) (11)), employers must make certain that ladder users climbing in either direction are facing the ladder steps at all times. ANSI A14.7, paragraph 6.10, allows users to descend rolling ladders facing away from the steps if the climb angle is 50 degrees or less.
As of January 17, 2017, ladders with a 50 degree or less climb angle remain in line with the design regulations of valid OSHA requirements and ANSI standards. Forward decent faced away from ladder steps when climbing downward is no longer permitted by OSHA 1910 subpart D, but is still permitted by ANSI A14.7.
Impending revisions of OSHA 1910 Subpart D – Walking-Working Surfaces (click here) and ANSI ASC A14.7-2011 American National Standard for Mobile Ladder Stands and Mobile Ladder Stand Platforms (click here) or more specifically (click here).
Upcoming revisions of OSHA 1910 Subpart D – Walking-Working Surfaces (click here), and ANSI A1264.1 Safety Requirements for Workplace Walking/Working Surfaces… (click here), also change the regulations for all guardrail systems, gates included. In order to meet the revised requirements, Tri-Arc’s Self-Closing U-Gate will face changes in instillation. Please ensure that current installations meet these updated requirements.
